When you think of summer travel essentials, a 100% wool poncho may not be the first item that comes to mind. However, let me make a case for this versatile garment.
Handmade in Ecuador by the Kichwa Indigenous people and designed by the talented Paloma Ruiz (you can see her below, wearing the Poncho Etnico in red), these soft and beautiful ponchos, also known as "ruanas" in Colombia, offer both style and practicality. Here, we'll explore why a wool poncho deserves a place in your summer wardrobe.
1) Air Travel:
We're all familiar with the unpredictable temperature changes on airplanes. A wool poncho can serve as a cozy layer to keep you comfortable during your flight. As you can see below, with the Sierra Poncho, it looks great with a pair of shorts & t-shirt. Shhh...it also looks great with simple black pjs, not that I'd ever travel in pjs.
2) Desert Nights and Cool Beach Days:
Contrary to popular belief, summer destinations in sunny California can have cool evenings, especially near the water. Here, you'll be glad you brought a warm poncho like this XO poncho I was lucky to bring to my latest beach mission in Santa Monica.
Additionally, when venturing into the desert, whether it be stargazing in Joshua Tree or embarking on a spiritual journey in Sedona, these ponchos provide the ideal layer of warmth and comfort.
3) Mom Hacks:
For traveling parents, the wool poncho offers practicality beyond fashion. It can double as a blanket for your kids or babies, providing comfort and warmth on-the-go. Additionally, it serves as a discreet breastfeeding cover in public places like airplanes or restaurants.
4) They're Unisex:
One of the unique aspects of these wool ponchos is their versatility. While they can be worn by both men and women, the XO poncho with a hood is particularly well-suited for taller men. However, other options like the poncho Natura in red, look equally great on men and women.
An added advantage is that you can conveniently pack your clothes in your partner's bag, all while making them feel special by remembering their favorite poncho.

5) They're lightweight and easy to care for:
These wool ponchos are surprisingly lightweight and easy to maintain. When you return home from your travels, simply toss your poncho into the washing machine in an oversized delicates mesh bag.
Remember to air dry it by laying it flat, perhaps on top of your washer and dryer. Although it may take about a day to dry completely, the effortless care and maintenance make it worth the wait.
