Happy International Women's Month
March is International Women’s Month, a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements, resilience, and stories of women around the world. At EVAMAIA, we take this moment to shine a light on the Wayuu women of the Guajira Peninsula in Northern Colombia—women who have preserved the ancient art of weaving mochilas (bags), turning their craft into a powerful symbol of cultural heritage, identity, and empowerment.
The Weaving Tradition: An Art Form Rooted in Myth and Legacy
For the Wayuu people, weaving is more than a craft—it is a sacred tradition passed down through generations. According to Wayuu mythology, the art of weaving was a gift from Wale’ Keru, a mythical spider-woman who taught the first Wayuu woman how to create intricate patterns. Since then, weaving has been a rite of passage, typically taught by mothers to daughters, ensuring that this tradition remains alive.
Using fibers such as wild cotton and maguey, Wayuu women create mochilas with mesmerizing geometric patterns, each one telling a story. These woven symbols, known as Kannas, depict their spirituality, worldview, and natural surroundings—from representations of the sun and moon (balance and harmony) to animals (strength and wisdom). Each mochila takes around 20 days to complete, making every piece a labor of love, patience, and skill.
Weaving as Empowerment
For Wayuu women, weaving is more than a creative practice—it is a path to independence and empowerment. By selling their mochilas, they support their families, preserve their culture, and sustain their communities. Their artistry allows them to pass down knowledge to future generations, maintaining their cultural identity in a rapidly changing world.
A Celebration of Women’s Strength and Legacy
This Women’s History Month, we honor the Wayuu women—guardians of tradition, storytellers through fiber, and pillars of resilience. Their craft is a testament to the power of heritage, creativity, and the enduring strength of women. As we celebrate their contributions, we also recognize the vital role women play in shaping history, culture, and communities worldwide.
