Sustainability

Fashion vs Planet

There is something comforting and exciting about clothing that can help you feel great while also serving as a tool for self expression. The personal interaction with small businesses, the act of wrapping and unwrapping a package, I believe all of this adds value to our lives.

As someone who enjoys these and so many more parts of shopping for new items, I often feel torn with my passion for retail and a deep understanding that my purchases impact the environment that our children and grandchildren will inherit from us.

This is why I have been so selective about the brands and materials we carry at EVAMAIA and the way we make purchases

First of all, I actively shy away from fashion trends. I order items that are made to last. All of our items looked good in the 1990's and will look great next season.

All of our brands have been working in a unique and strategic way to reduce their negative impact on the environment. Encantadore's printing process does not use water or chemicals whatsoever, for example. Mar de Lua uses only natural dyes. Malai's offices are powered by solar panels.

All brands have sharply reduced the use of plastic in their packaging.

Finally, all our brands produce in small batches. While this can make it challenging for us to reorder sizes, etc. It assures that unworn clothing will not go into landfills.

Human "Sustainability"

Another form of sustainability that is rarely mentioned is the impact of fashion on the artisans that create our favorite items. Before bringing in new brands, I personally speak with the owners and representatives about their entire process. I have visited several manufacturing studios and offices. When it's possible, I order directly from the artisans.

Part of my job at EVAMAIA is to make sure that everyone who has touched the piece ART you're considering buying from us is paid a respectable living wage and treated as the human being that (s)he is.
